Harnessing the Cool Benefits of Cool Roofs. Cool roofs keep homes cool by reflecting most of the incident heat from the sun.
Cool roofs are one of the biggest buzzwords in roof energy efficiency today. They work by reflecting a large fraction of incident solar radiation, dramatically reducing the amount of heat absorbed by your home. They also quickly release whatever amount of heat they end up absorbing.
Is energy efficiency a concern for you? You’re not alone. Every year, Americans spend around $40 billion on air conditioning alone. That’s the equivalent of a sixth of all the electricity the United States consumes annually!
Some owners of old buildings and houses often wonder if restoring their properties is worth it. In Virginia, the state encourages the preservation of historic structures as it enriches our lives in different ways. It keeps the connection between our heritage and us intact. Furthermore, it offers many economic benefits.
Many of us think of Thomas Jefferson as the author of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. However, did you know he also designed the roof for the University of Virginia which he founded? This is just one example of how slate roofing gives new life to old structures.
First-time slate cutters of all ages tried their hand at creating their own 100 Year-Old Vermont Semi-Weathering Grey Green Slate Coaster Keepsake to remember the event. It was such a hit we had just enough to go around until we completely ran out of coasters by closing time. Don’t miss the many pictures that captured seconds in time at this grandeur day in history.

Your roof takes a lot of abuse from the weather on a daily basis and this month has definitely been no exception. Occasional storms and winter and summer extremes can take their toll over time. Identifying common roof problems early, such as dripping in parts of the ceiling or stains on the wall, can help get to the “roof” of the matter, so to speak, before things get out of hand and drain your savings. Hold on to those savings and learn which common roof problems not to ignore.
Tuesday, January 2, 2018 marked The Roofing Company’s 6th Annual Training Day where employees, and guest suppliers, taught and learned from each other. While some things stayed the same as previous years, see last year’s Blog “What’s in a Training Day”, each year adds something new to mix of this invigorating educational event. 2017 earns major accolades for a complete warehouse overhaul and an implemented materials management process. Way to go team!!
The snow, labeled as a potential “coastal bomb” blizzard yesterday, swooped in overnight covering the Newport News area with close to 6-8 inches. Strong winds whipped the snow in one direction and another, causing drifts of higher snow heaps in various areas. No matter the location, though, the first measure of protection for a home against snow and rain in many parts of the country is the roof.
The Roofing Company is delighted and very proud to announce that our amazing and talented team combined has over 200 years of roofing experience! Now that is where excellence is built!
As the weather cools down and evenings in front of a cozy fireplace become a ritual of the winter season, you may want to consider the condition of your chimney. In addition to having your chimney cleaned, it’s good practice to have an experienced roofing professional inspect it annually for leaks.
Roofs continue to protect our homes from all kinds of weather conditions, and it’s important that they stand the test of time. A roof’s life span depends on the material it’s made from. One of the longest-lasting roof materials is slate.
Time flies by so fast that you don’t notice the changes happening around you. One day, your house looks brand-new. The next, your roof looks old and worn-out. If your roof is old or damaged, it may be high time that you get a roof upgrade.
For many homeowners, a roofing project is a significant investment that offers many long-term benefits. Know what information should be contained within an estimate to help you set expectations from the start and save you from unexpected expenses later.
Temperatures have started cooling down right in time for the fall season and another Halloween is now a thing of the past. Don't be fooled, however, by the ghouls and goblins in the contractor industry. They are out there all year around disguised as a real person!
Just like any roof, whether it’s asphalt, metal, tile or slate, the function is always to provide shelter, shield from rain and snow, and resist the often high speed winds we experience here in Hampton Roads. Slate, on the other hand, is special in that it is a naturally solid, ultra-dependable and one of the longest lasting roofing materials created by the earth itself. A slate roof can last anywhere from 100-200 years. Wow! Adding more cool points to this stone we admire so much, there are a variety of roof types that can be installed.
Ahhhh, Slate. The beautiful, natural and versatile stone we are in love with. Literally! When you understand what it’s made of, where it comes from, and how it’s used, you may also find that it’s pretty darn fascinating. It’s more than just a rock and we are excited to announce, with our lightweight slate system, it’s a roof that can be installed on any home!
When it’s time for a Roof Replacement and you’ve found a qualified and reputable contractor to do the job, it’s a good idea to also be familiar with terms included in your estimate. We’ll share parts of a roof that you should know about.
First and foremost, a roof is designed to protect the home from weather and hopefully with the least amount of maintenance as possible! Of course, appearance is also important, however, take into consideration how that type of roof will perform throughout the seasons. This is where maintenance can become a huge factor, or not. Specific roof designs are better suited for certain regions.
No American home is the same, we can surely agree on that. Every home has its unique style, design, and personality. When it comes to home structures, though, there are several styles over the centuries that have been adapted from other parts of the world or designed right here in good’ole America. Since there are so many styles we could cover, we will talk about the handful of them that have remained timeless and popular. Let’s take a stroll into some American home style history, shall we?
It is truly heartbreaking the devastation and destruction Hurricane Harvey has left in its wrath across Texas and Louisiana this week, dumping over 9 trillion gallons over Houston alone! It’s no surprise Harvey has been labeled “the worst rainfall disaster in US history” by some climatologists!
When a major storm hits there is often a lapse in time between when the damage occurs and when a professional is able to come out to your house.
We are already over a month into the Atlantic 2017 hurricane season. As some may recall last September, Hurricane Matthew blew through Hampton Roads with a heavy wet roar and has been labeled as one of the strongest and deadliest storms of the 2016 season. Believe it or not, Matthew made it in the top 10, coming in at number 9, as one of the costliest hurricanes on record.
What makes a company more proud about its success than to hear it straight from their customers.
In conjunction with The Roofing Company's 19 year anniversary, we'd like to share a few recent testimonials.

This highly coveted award recognizes The Roofing Company, one of 2 in the nation, as an “elite of the elite” residential roofing contractors in the United States.
Renovations on the Victorian Reed House are moving along nicely. Since the project is only minutes from the office and I was already out running an errand for work, I decided to stop by myself and see this major project underway. Currently, our amazingly talented crew is working on replacing the lining on the internal gutter system all the way around the multi-dimensional roofline.
Exterior renovations have begun on the Historical Reed House on Victoria Boulevard in the national historic district in Hampton, Virginia. This beautiful yellow brick home, unique for its dormers with elaborate crestings, is under the care of The Roofing Company to bring it close to it's original state when it was built c 1902.

When the weather is a delightfully breezy 80 degrees as it is now, it’s hard to think about frozen ice balls falling from the sky. The local hail storm we had in Newport News and neighboring areas was a couple of months ago, however, we are still receiving calls from homeowners with roof damage from that storm. Even if you are contacting your insurance, it’s in your best interest to contact a roofing contractor as well. Listed below are common questions and answers during that process.
Brian and Teresa Chalsma proudly accept the 2016 GAF President's Club Award from GAF President, James Schnepper and GAF Vice President, Brian Kimber at the 2017 GAF Conference in San Antonio, Texas. They feel especially honored to accept the award for the entire Roofing Company team.
If you think getting tornadoes in Hampton Roads is unusual, how about hail, and that happening on a warm day!! You might have been witness to the recent hail storm that fell through the Newport News Area. Wavy 10 TV announced, “There were several reports of hail – from pea-sized to ping-pong ball-sized. In addition to hail, there were strong winds, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.” This type of weather can wreak serious havoc on your roof, especially in combination!
Tidewater residents can attest to one thing, there certainly isn’t a shortage of severe weather action in Hampton Roads. Just last week, The National Weather Service in Wakefield confirmed it was an EF2, possibly even an EF3, tornado that hit Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Friday night. That type of tornado isn’t likely expected in this area when the severe weather warning alerts get publicized.
Slate has been a choice material for homes with traditional inspirations.
Whether it be classic public buildings or grand estates, slate roofs are ideal due to their timeless elegance and centuries-lasting versatility. Now it’s a specialty material known for its metamorphic green, gray and red tones, as well as its rock-solid durability. With these admirable qualities, slate is highly suitable as a roofing material for home improvement.
Our friends at John Stortz & Son, a supplier of high-quality slate roofing tools, often post about unique slate work being done in Europe and other parts of the world. We will share some of these amazing projects, along with a brief history of the proud tradition of slate roofing.
The entire company staff comes together once a year to hold it’s “Training Day” and every year it’s a little different and always an improvement from the last. A team is formed with employees from different departments and preparation is started months in advance. The training includes the sales, production and administration aspects, with the goal of having all employees gaining a better understanding of areas outside their typical daily duties. It unifies our team as a whole. You can see Training Day at The Roofing Company is a rather important event!
Our last blog was the start of a series that will cover the significance of employee training within The Roofing Company culture. Not only is it part of the company mission statement, it is also the second key point of our 7-Point Satisfaction Guarantee, which is to send one of our Factory Trained Roofing Professionals to meet with you and get started on your Customer RoofCo Solution. Why is this so important to our culture and beneficial to you? Because we believe in, and take great pride in, providing our customer with the best experience, from the time of the first contact, to when we return to conduct our annual inspection on the work we completed.
How many companies do you know that have staff training on a regular basis? You can probably name several. Now, how many construction companies can you even imagine, not only hold an Annual Training Day at the end of each year, but train their staff continuously throughout the year? Okay, may a few. Nail down a bit further (yes, pun intended), and we’ll narrow it down to one of only two GAF Master Elite Presidents Club roofing companies in Virginia to win the GAF Training Excellence Award consecutively for over fourteen years according to a top GAF trainer. You guessed it, The Roofing Company, Inc. in Hampton, Virginia, who has been a performance and customer service driven company in the Hampton Roads Area, Virginia since 1998.
The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” holds true, especially when it comes to keeping your home in shape. Taking a few preventive measures and some maintenance steps early on can go far in keeping your home cozy. Here The Roofing Company lists five ways to keep your home warm and comfortable over the winter season.
Your home provides you shelter, protects your family from the weather, keeps you comfortable, and reflects your unique personality and taste. The summer heat has gone and left us with comfortable cool temperatures, so now it’s the perfect time to invest in energy efficiency and prepare for the autumn months. The Roofing Company suggests four great home improvement projects to complete this month.
Fall is a great time of year. For roofers, the weather is cooler, which is a great relief from the hot summer season and up on the rooftops there is a phenomenal view of the leaves in changing colors! The Roofing Company crews can work long hours and get projects completed quickly without the risk for heat exhaustion. However, it’s not cold enough to interfere with any manufacturer’s recommended best installation practices, so we don’t have to worry about material problems due to low temperatures.
Skylights are a wonderful way to bring more natural light and warmth into your home while saving on energy costs. As beautiful and functional as they are, skylights, when not properly installed and maintained, can be a source of headaches for homeowners. Because skylights are mounted on the roof, serious leaks can occur. Diagnosing and repairing skylight leaks can be tricky, even for the professionals.
For those viewers who'd rather look at pictures than read a lot of text, this blog is for you! One particular Roofing Company customer took skylights and creativity to a whole other level. Oh, and I should mention, there is a fountain in the middle of the home right under the newly installed Skylights.
You can transform any space in your home by adding skylights. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing form the outside but even more appealing from the inside where you can appreciate the beauty of nature and create a connection to the outdoors. You’ll enjoy the benefits of the outdoors without the drawbacks!

Do you ever wonder why roofing contractors get a bad reputation? Much of it is due to roofing scammers called Storm Chasers or roofing gypsies. These out-of-town roofing companies pack up from wherever they are and temporarily locate to where the latest storm has caused significant damages. Once there, they canvas the area with literature, knock on doors and may even offer a free inspection. A contractor simply showing up at your door unannounced and offering to do repairs on the spot with payment, is a huge red flag. Don't fall victim to them! Their plan is to get as much work done as they can, in the shortest amount of time, and move on to the next storm damaged area. Should there be any issues with the work they performed, that is at the homeowners expense. By that time, they are likely long gone and can't be held accountable since there is no way to reach or find them.
The ferocious winds and flying limbs have subsided, so you take a deep breath and walk outside of your house to check for any damages. You might be one of the lucky ones to sigh in relief that everything checks out, and your house is in the same shape it was before the storm. On the other hand, you might be the homeowner staring at damages that simply cannot be ignored. So , you investigate and try to decide whether or not to involve your home insurance company to fix the repairs.
Recognizing our local Law Enforcement Officers and thanking them for their dedication and bravery in keeping us safe.
Hurricane Hermine has come and gone, leaving it's path in hurricane history with minimal damages. When I say minimal, I only mean in comparison to particular storms of the past. Maybe you, personally, can relate to the ones that are mentioned below.
The Roofing Company holds a reputation in the Hampton Roads area for strictly following manufacturer’s guidelines. Inspecting an attic for proper ventilation is followed just a seriously as any physical work performed. Therefore, the best options recommended to a homeowner are based on standards set by two manufacturers they support; Air Vent & GAF.
In a past blog, we discussed the importance of attic ventilation for your home. Proper ventilation serves two main purposes: in the summer it allows hot air that has collected at the roof deck to escape out of the attic, and in the winter it thins and removes moist air before it can lead to damage. Here are the reasons ventilation matters in every season.
If the attic has a proper ventilation system, it allows a continual flow of outside air through the attic, protecting the efficiency of the insulation and helping to lower temperatures in the living space. This helps reduce the load on your air conditioner by moving hot air out of your attic.
Are you looking for ways to keep your home cool and comfortable this summer? Are you hoping to cut back on your energy costs, as well? Over the years, your home has been exposed to various weather conditions. With that constant exposure to the elements, some maintenance work may need to be done in order to make your home cool, comfortable, and energy-efficient.
Too much of a good thing can be bad. The same is true for about your roof. Because it’s always exposed to the sun, it is prone to damage that can shorten its lifespan.
Whew, it is HOT out there. One step outside from a comfortably air conditioned space and the heat hits you like standing close to a bonfire on a cool night. The true sign Summer is upon us and here to stay for a while.
While summer is the perfect time to fire up the barbecue or enjoy a spur-of-the-moment vacation, it can also be the hardest season to score deals. Because these months are the peak time for many resorts and airlines, you’re less likely to find discounted products and services. But summer doesn’t have to be expensive; in fact, it can be frugal and fun when you use these clever ways to save!
If you’re a longtime resident of Virginia, you know we are exposed to severe weather conditions on a regular basis. Heavy rains and strong winds that accompany thunderstorms threaten our homes. Damaging weather systems like hurricanes and hailstorms can also be a big problem.
When the storm has passed and no longer poses a threat, it's a good idea to check immediately for any roofing damages and sources of any leaks.
Tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires. Any of these can leave your home or community devastated. It is important that you have an emergency disaster plan to ensure your family’s safety, and have the ability to communicate and reconvene when the danger has passed.
June 1 sets off the Atlantic hurricane season and this year's’ predictions are average or above-average compared to last year’s quieter than normal season. The U.S. National Weather Service can predict and inform you whenever any kind of storm will hit your area. Unfortunately, they can’t tell you how much it will affect you in terms of damage. It’s best to exercise caution and prepare for any storm so you can mitigate its devastating effects.
If you’re going for a rustic look on your home, the Virginia Beach roofers at The Roofing Company have just the product for you! New for 2015, GAF has introduced the Glenwood™ shingle collection, featuring the thickest asphalt shingles manufactured today.
The Roofing & Remodeling Company is pleased to announce that the “Roofs for Troops” promotion is again available to qualifying homeowners in Hampton Roads.
Brian and Teresa Chalsma recently attended the 2014 GAF Wealth Builder Conference in Isle of Palms, SC. At the conclusion of the conference, The Roofing & Remodeling Company was among a select number of GAF Master Elite™ contractors nationally that was awarded all three of the 2013 GAF Master Elite Excellence Awards.
Selecting the kind of roof that is perfect for your location’s climate entails questions—a series of questions, if you may.
Some parts of the country have experienced damaging heavy rains and sporadic thunderstorms lately. Even the mostly sunny Virginia Beach is not spared as the past few weeks proved to be soggy.
With shingle roofing, you really do get what you pay for. In the case of a large national hotel chain with multiple properties in Hampton Roads, it was a hard lesson learned. [Note: To prevent embarrassment due to the poor decisions of the General Manager of these properties, this hotel chain asked us not to publish their name in this case study.]
Are you the type of homeowner who’s careful about regular roof inspections, or is the laissez-faire attitude toward roof maintenance more your style? Whichever type you are, acting fast the moment you see the need for roof repairs or a full-on replacement can be one of the best investments you'll make. Virginia Beach roofing companies say that corrective roofing projects are always worth doing as soon as possible.
Putting safe Norfolk roofing over your head is not a onetime deal. If you have poorly installed asphalt shingles, chances are they’ve curled, buckled, or gone missing. The worst-case scenario is when they aren’t tacked on properly. Strong winds might carry shingle parts wherever they please. The same is true for other roofing materials, including metal, slate, and others.
Special education teacher Laura Norman is the recipient of a new roof, under the No Roof Left Behind™ program. We at The Roofing & Remodeling Co., a professional Chesapeake roofing contractor, will be installing a free roof replacement for the hailed winner.
If you are a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, you’re probably aware that even though springs and summers here are typically wet due to the constant rainfall, it can still be really hot and humid. This is because of our geographical location—we are in a humid subtropical climate zone, which brings mild winters and hot, humid summers.
As you prepare to welcome spring and all its colors, don’t forget to pencil in some home maintenance work. March is a great time to check your property for any damage caused by shifting weather conditions.
Aside from being beneficial to the environment, green roofs are known for their cost-efficiency. Roof upgrades in this nature also contribute to the increase of the real estate value of the house, which makes it all the more attractive as an investment.
If you’ve had enough of those ugly black streaks that form even on “algae-resistant” shingles, The Roofing Company has a permanent solution. Some homeowners associations are very serious about making sure the roofs in their neighborhoods remain free streak-free, which can be very frustrating if your roof has this tendency.
It’s fall again! It’s the time of the year when Virginia Beach homeowners bust out their ladders, roll up their sleeves, and get cracking on their roofs and gutters before the first snow falls. It’s not a job anyone looks forward to, but we grin and bear it year after year because everyone and their mother knows how important functional gutters are to our roofs and homes.
Like their counterparts in other cities and states, roofing contractors in Virginia Beach often receive questions about slate roofs. One of the most frequently asked questions is what advantages slate roofs have over other kinds of roofing.

As in relationships and other types of ventures, communication is an important factor when hiring contractors to work on your roof. Because this type of project can sometimes be stressful to some property owners, effective communication can help lessen worries. It can also help you save time and avoid unnecessary expenses.
Did you know that The Roofing Company is also the go-to company for window installation and window repair in Richmond, VA? As part of our commitment to providing full-service improvements to our customers, we have become a Pella® Certified Contractor.
Shingles are the most common roofing material in the United States. Shingles are popular with roofing contractors and with consumers because, among other things, they are lightweight and easy to install – with a reasonable amount of do-it-yourself experience, roof shingles can be replaced without the need to call in a roofing professional.
An article posted on ABC Action News discusses why a roofing job always needs to be taken seriously: “Updating your roof is one of the most significant investments you can make, as it can last 20 to 30 years.”
We all know that the roof is an important part of every house. It protects everyone and everything underneath it from the sun, rain, wind, snow, hail, and other damaging factors Mother Nature has in store for us.
Norfolk, Virginia and the area surrounding it has a rich history; if you take a stroll around some of the neighborhoods in the area, you’ll see that many of the homes here have either been restored or styled after historical houses. One particular architectural style that has been preserved or has been a popular choice for many residents is Queen Anne.
Slate roofing is slowly becoming a trend within homeowners all over the United States once more. Just ask The Roofing and Remodeling Company, a Virginia Beach roofing company who has worked within the industry for years.
What homeowner would say no to a more energy-efficient home—one that lets you make the most of your investment, reduces your energy consumption, and keeps you comfortable all year round? If your goal is better energy efficiency for your home and household, there are few improvements with as big a payoff as adding insulation to your roof and attic.
Right now, your roof may be due for a repair or replacement, but before you even get to the nitty-gritty of your project, you need to do a full background check on the roofing contractors on your shortlist. The last thing you want, after all, is to fall prey to a fly-by-night roofer.
As they offer a range of advantages, it is not surprising that flat roofs are popular as commercial roofing options. The situation may have been different some 10 years ago but now, the flat roof has become the go-to choice for many commercial establishments. Want to know what makes a flat roof such an attractive option?
Every year since 2012, The Roofing & Remodeling Company team has gathered on December 31 to get the new year started off right with a Team Training Day. The latest team training was held in our on-location training center, and included a team building exercise called Back-to-Back Drawing.
According to the recent estimates of the Energy Information Administration, 14% of all residential electricity consumption is used for lighting.
