We headed out to Smithfield to walk the roof of a building that’s stood since 1750. Working on a structure with that much history requires more than just standard tools; it requires a deep respect for the materials that’ve kept our Tidewater community safe for nearly three centuries.
The Problem
As it turns out, even the sturdiest historic landmarks need a little neighborly TLC. We found that the masonry on the chimneys was beginning to show its age, and a few sections of the slate needed attention to prevent leaks. Additionally, the ridge—the very top peak of the roof where two slopes meet—needed a permanent solution that could handle the constant expansion and contraction caused by our Virginia humidity.
The Technical Why
We used Buckingham Slate, which is known for its incredible durability, often lasting well over 150 years. To cap things off, we installed a new copper ridge. We used straps underneath and riveted it with a brass mandrel—which is a specialized tool used to set a heavy-duty rivet—to allow the metal to "breathe."
Here’s why that matters for a local roof:
- Metal moves: Because metal grows and shrinks as it heats up in the summer sun, this technique prevents the metal from buckling.
- Storm ready: It ensures the ridge stays secure even when those heavy coastal winds start kicking up.
- Peace of mind: You can sleep through a heavy downpour knowing the "bones" of the building are tucked away dry.
Trusted by the Guardians of History:
It’s one thing for us to say the work is solid, but it’s another thing to hear it from the people who oversee these historic properties. While the project was underway, we had the chance to speak with one of the courthouse representatives about the restoration process. Watch the on-site testimonial here to see why the stewards of Smithfield's history trust us with this 270-year-old landmark.
Professional Advice
If you live in a historic home or a property with a slate roof, consistency is key. We performed masonry repairs and specific slate swaps, but we also identified areas to monitor for the future. You don’t always have to do everything at once, but staying ahead of small repairs prevents the kind of major water damage that threatens your home’s legacy.
