16 Years Preserving a Historic 1920 Newport News Slate Roof

Project Overview

Historic dormer and major valley/eave roofing restoration in Virginia Beach addressed decades-old cedar and slate damage, tarred repairs, and compromised decking to restore protection and curb appeal. The homeowner wanted durable, period-appropriate materials and storm resistance; we removed and preserved roughly 220 slates, replaced siding, upgraded decking, and integrated modern flashing for long-term performance.

Results

The restoration replaced improper third-party strap-and-tar repairs with traditional nail-and-bib and stainless-steel slate hook techniques, eliminating recurring leaks and reducing maintenance needs.
Rebuilding valleys with preserved historic slates and installing custom flashing improved water shedding and resilience against coastal storms, while new 4-ply CDX decking and architectural shingles increased structural stability and roof life.
Proactive debris and hazard management—routine inspections, debris removal, and targeted emergency replacement of a damaged slate—kept the site safe and minimized secondary damage. The work carries material-backed warranties and The Roofing Company workmanship guarantee, delivering improved durability, reduced leak risk, and measurable curb appeal gains.

Materials Used

This historic dormer roofing project on Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, VA was completed by The Roofing Company as a roofing restoration for a locally significant property.
Homeowners reported satisfaction with craftsmanship and material selection, including Vermont semi-weathering gray-green slate, cedar perfection siding, and precision aluminum flashing that preserved the home's historic character while upgrading performance.
