Project Description
Preserving a Smithfield Landmark: A Multi-Year Project
The Roofing Company, Inc. is proud of its multi-year partnership with Trinity United Methodist Church since 2017. Our team has performed extensive and intricate work across the church's diverse roofing systems, including real Buckingham slate, mineral fiber tiles, asphalt shingles, and various low-slope membranes. Our commitment to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail has ensured the long-term preservation and integrity of this historic property.
Our scope of work over the years has included a wide range of tasks to address the unique needs of each building on the campus. Key project highlights include:
Slate Roofing: We have performed numerous repairs on both the real Buckingham and man-made mineral fiber slate roofs. Our team has replaced loose, broken, or incorrectly installed slates using methods that adhere to early 1900s and 1926/2010 NSA (National Slate Association) standards. The repairs used a recycled Buckingham slate and were performed using nail and bib or heavy-duty stainless-steel hook methods.
Asphalt Shingles: We conducted various repairs on the asphalt shingle roofs, including repairing missing shingles at the cricket and addressing nail pops. The new shingles used were CertainTeed Independence in the Weathered Wood color. We also applied a commercial water repellent to the exposed cinder block masonry wall.
Low-Slope Roofing: Our team completed maintenance and repair work on the PVC, EPDM, and SBS Modified Bitumen roof areas. This work included cleaning out drains, repairing hip metal that was damming up water, and fixing leaks and blisters on the SBS Modified Bitumen roof. We also cleaned and repaired voids in the single-ply roof areas.
Masonry, Gutters & Copper: We performed critical masonry repairs on the first corbel around the base of the steeple and a brick chimney. This work involved removing deteriorated masonry and installing new, historically correct Limeworks lime mortar, followed by the application of a high-performance masonry water repellent. We also custom-made and installed new collector heads, heavy-duty 4-inch Nordic steel downspouts, and 6-inch Nordic gutters. A chimney was re-flashed with new 16 oz. copper step flashing and a copper cricket, and was repointed with Limeworks mortar.
The multi-year project at Trinity United Methodist Church stands as a testament to our dedication to long-term client relationships and our ability to deliver comprehensive, high-quality solutions for complex and historical properties. We are honored to have played a role in protecting this important community landmark.
