Insider Look how to Critter Protect Your Roof

Insider Look how to Critter Protect Your Roof

As we covered earlier this month, there’s that annoying builder’s gap that leaves a vulnerable space between the fascia board and the bottom of the roof deck for roof rats, birds, squirrels and all kinds of other critters to enter your home. Get an inside look and find out the ultimate secret to critter protect your roof once and for all!

By now we know what the builder’s gap is and that it is, unfortunately, a common building practice on homes.  Not the best practice when you consider it creates the perfect entrance into your attic for critters and allows wind-blown rain to enter in the same way.

This is a close-up view of where the entrance is.  It’s big enough to stick an entire hand into the attic from the outside.  Yikes! I’m sure we all have seen squirrels and birds in similar size that would easily be able to access this entry!

A view from the inside where a critter has made a bed inside the attic.  The temptation of this warm and dry space was too much to pass up, which is especially the perfect dwelling when they are ready to welcome their babies!

The tape measure is sticking out from inside the attic, making it easy to see where the critter gets in.

Here’s an example of improperly installed drip edge and the reasons why it doesn’t work:

  • Drip edge is too thin
  • Drip edge is too short of flange
  • No drip edge at the eave

We see where a very clever squirrel chewed up the Builder’s Gap in this customer’s attic, making a nice custom round designed critter entrance for his new home.

Here is your typical drip edge you get at the Big Box stores, which is too thin and short of flange.  Not much of a challenge for those persistant and pesky home invaders.

Now this will do the trick! Heavy duty aluminum drip edge with longer flange and heavy gauge. PROVEN to keep CRITTERS out.

So there you have it folks.  To keep those critters from making their home in your home, cover up that builder’s gap with strong and heavy aluminum drip edge. The time is now before the weather gets colder and they decide to nuzzle in your cozy dwelling.
