Our Team » Brian Chalsma
"Your actions speak so loud I can’t hear what you are saying."
Brian has been in Virginia since 1986, when the Army stationed him at Ft. Eustis. He liked Virginia so much he decided to stay after he got out of the Army. What a great decision that was! Brian started Chalsma Contracting in 1995 and later co-founded The Roofing Company in 1998, which since 2011 was renamed The Roofing and Remodeling Company.
Brian enjoys most is the people he works with and the services the company strives to provide to their clients. He is a born leader and a huge advocate for continuous improvement, which he implements within the company team as much as possible. Brian has met with several thousand local homeowners over the years providing estimates for various services that we offer. All too many times, he was called out to the clients home when they had another contractor install a product incorrectly and now the property owner has to hire us to repair the previous contractors’ work. He prides himself that as a company, The Roofing and Remodeling Company, follows the manufacturer’s specifications of their products. If there is one person in Hampton Roads who knows about slate roofing, it’s Brian Chalsma! He has a desire to see historic buildings continue in their function – especially their roofs. Brian is the Vice-President of the National Slate Association and has read The Slate Bible, written by Joe Jenkins, several times and then some. His experience and knowledge of slate roofing is more than impressive and he is more than willing to share that with anyone who asks about it. Since he is big on continuous improvement you bet that what he learns, the company slate roofing installers are sure be trained on! Brian’s favorite pass time is spending it with his wife, Teresa Chalsma, and his three daughters.
Our Team » Staci Davis
“God’s delays are not denials.”
She is one of three owners of the company with Brian Chalsma and Teresa Chalsma and has been since 1998. Staci was in retail management for 13 years and a co-founder and a managing partner of a local office supply company for 5 years.
In 1998 Staci was a founding member of The Roofing Company Inc. and began working full-time with the company in 2006. That same year Staci and Pete Johnson started The Remodeling Company, a new division of The Roofing Company, Inc. That evolved into her being the CFO of The Roofing and Remodeling Company. Part of her many very important roles is ensuring that the company adheres to the guidelines established for businesses in the state of Virginia; paying taxes, licenses, insurance, etc. Staci takes great pride in knowing we have a company that provides a superior construction experience for our clients and a safe and positive work environment for our employees. She should! She is the one that provides the standard operating procedures for the team, which is how they continue to provide a superior construction experience for our customers. Staci has been involved with the Virginia Peninsula Rotary Club for several years as well as a past board member for The Copeland Industrial Park. She attends Northside Christian Church where she teaches Sunday school for the 2-3 year olds. She likes reading, going to the beach, exploring new activities with her son and spending time with friends in her free time. Most of all though, she enjoys the time with her 6-year-old son (2013).
Our Team » Teresa Chalsma
After graduating from Radford University in 1987 with a BS degree in Business / Marketing, Teresa spent the next 8 years loving advertising sales for various newspapers — The News Virginian in Waynesboro, VA, The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, VA, The Yorktown Crier in Yorktown, VA and The Virginian Pilot in Norfolk, VA.“I will greet each day with love in my heart!”
Somewhere in the middle of all that she met the man of her dreams when she went to sell him an ad for a Martial Arts School he was opening. Her sales persistence paid off and they were married in 1990. Now in 2013 she and Brian Chalsma have been married for over 23 years.
In 1995 she and Brian opened their own business – Chalsma Contracting. That became The Roofing Company in 1998, with Staci Davis and built it to be the brand name it is in the Hampton Roads Virginia Market. By 2006, the company expanded adding The Remodeling Company and built it to the level of a premier remodeling firm. Since 2011 The Roofing and Remodeling Company merged to share all of it’s many expertise’s.
What Teresa likes most about what she does is that she doesn’t think most of the employees realize how serious she takes the importance of their lives and that they become family. At the same time that can sometimes hurt. You may see someone almost as your child/sister/brother but they may only see you as a job.
Teresa’s role in the company is more of the protector. The one that makes sure that everything is OK. If people feel like they have a “no judgment” free zone place to be and are able to work and try to achieve the common goal together, they can be more productive.
She loves to take her girls to all of their activities. They have lots of fun going to swim meets and dance competitions which are to include a “Mom Road Concert of the Best of the 80’s!” to the old hip hop.
Teresa and Brian have 3 girls who are very active in church, swimming and dance. They all enjoy spending time together as a family!
Teresa says, “If I’m ever asked advice about what I tell my girls or quotes it would be this, “I will great each day with love in my heart!” Phil 4:13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. The best advice is hold your head high and walk in a room like you own it. You are a great person and you deserve the best that life as to offer but sometimes life doesn’t give it –you have to go take it. So go after it and work for that blessing you deserve.” Well said Teresa!!!

This helps us work better and closer as a team as well as become cross-trained in other departments.”
