Congratulations Hilton Village! Join the celebration Saturday, July 7th, 8 am - 10 pm, at Hilton Village in Newport News where an entire day's worth of activities will be enjoyed to celebrate its 100th Anniversary; established in 1918. Check out the video from The Roofing Company and Newmont Slate Company, filmed in the depth of the Vermont Slate Quarry in honor of Hilton Village. The Vermont semi-gray green roofing slate installed on Hilton Village homes, originated from this quarry 100 years ago and still comes from there today.
The Roofing Company will be located in front of the Women’s Club on Main Street, showing its support of this magnificent historical neighborhood. Stop by our booth and try your hand with the same slate cutting tool used today by our own slate technicians that was used 100 years ago.
Hilton Village has quite a significance as America’s first public housing project built in the United States. It was created to house shipyard workers during World War I. John V. Quarstein, author of Hilton Village: America’s First Public Community, vividly depicts the neighborhood setting in his book. “Hilton’s distinctive cottage-style architecture, reminiscent of an English village, is one of the first examples of the New Urbanism and Garden City movements in America. Along the tree-lined streets are homes and shops that might have been pulled from a Dickens novel.” No doubt, driving through Hilton Village, as many of us do, is like traveling through time as Quarstein describes. John V. Quarstein’s book will be available for purchase at many locations during the 100th Anniversary Celebration event.
Join us during the day long celebration! It’s free and open to the public!
