As the weather cools down and evenings in front of a cozy fireplace become a ritual of the winter season, you may want to consider the condition of your chimney. In addition to having your chimney cleaned, it’s good practice to have an experienced roofing professional inspect it annually for leaks.
A leaky chimney can be the culprit of all sorts of problems, which can result in costly repairs. One of the more common issues we find related to leaks around the chimney system is faulty flashing. Other areas of concern can be from cracks in the chimney crown, leaking from the inside out from condensation, and leaking bricks .
Chimney flashing is a layer of sheet metal that covers the gap where a roof and chimney meet. Flashing is generally made of stainless steel, aluminum or copper, and custom-fitted around your chimney to protect against water infiltration. For a watertight fit, flashing is installed in two layers: one under the roofing material and another extending up the side of the chimney. Caulk is then laid around the edges to seal the installation.
Sometimes flashing becomes damaged or corroded to the point that it can no longer keep water out, or the caulk loosens and creates gaps that need to be resealed. Occasionally flashing is missing entirely. In all of these cases, our skilled technicians can make repairs that will solve leak issues around your chimney. Every chimney is different, making the installation of chimney flashing a custom project that should be done by an experienced professional.
Let’s not forget Santa! After all, he has a lot of homes to visit in such a short period. We would bet, he’d be a lot jollier continuing his travels in a dry suit. If you ever wondered where the stories about Santa coming down the chimney originated, there are several versions. To reference a few, Santa was mentioned sliding down the chimney in the 1812 A History of New York by Washington Irving. In 1822 Clement Moore wrote a poem entitled A Visit from St. Nicholas about eight miniature reindeer pulling a tiny man in a sleigh, landing on houses where he comes down the chimney to stockings hung by the fireplace. Then to add a more visual dimension to this happy and rosy cheeked giver of gifts, Thomas Nast, later in the 19th Century, depicted a Santa living in the North Pole with a workshop and busy working elves, in his cartoon drawings in the Harper’s Weekly.
