This past fall, our own Brian Chalsma was excited to help coordinate the annual fall membership meeting of the National Slate Association (NSA), held October 24-26, 2013 in Richmond, Va. Chalsma currently serves as Vice President of the organization, and also holds a seat on the Board of Directors.
Approximately 50 slate roofing contractors from Hampton Roads and around the country participated in the three-day event, which began on Thursday with tours of local structures with Buckingham Slate roofs. Brian helped coordinate the tours, providing information about the properties and details about their roofs and other unique architectural components. Among the visits enjoyed by members during the gathering was Dover Hall, a privately owned, 33,000 square foot Tudor-style mansion located just outside Richmond.
Friday’s activities included a visit to the Buckingham Slate Company, located in Arvonia, Va. Tours of the quarry pits, slate yard and production facilities were led by Brad Jones, Sr., co-owner of the company. Attendees received a first-hand account of the slate vein’s characteristics and how it is excavated.
Saturday began with a NSA membership meeting at the beautiful Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. The day culminated with a private tour of Carter’s Grove Plantation, a stately brick Georgian-style mansion located near Williamsburg. The property recently underwent an extensive Buckingham Slate roof repair project completed by The Roofing & Remodeling Company. Brian arranged this visit especially for NSA members, with historical insights shared by Matt Webster, Director of Historic Architectural Resources for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
Brian feels the conference was a great success. “It’s always good to network and spend time with slate roofers not in your market,” he says. “Everyone enjoyed seeing the unique properties in Richmond, and it was great to learn about the modern technology being used at the Buckingham Slate quarry. They’re producing more slate and better slate than has ever been produced in the last 100 years.”
The annual NSA membership meeting is scheduled for May 2-3, 2014, in Charleston, South Carolina. All NSA members are encouraged to attend and participate.
