Tools & Tips

June 1 sets off the Atlantic hurricane season and this year's’ predictions are average or above-average compared to last year’s quieter than normal season. The U.S. National Weather Service can predict and inform you whenever any kind of storm will hit your area. Unfortunately, they can’t tell you how much it will affect you in terms of damage. It’s best to exercise caution and prepare for any storm so you can mitigate its devastating effects.

Your roofing is the most vulnerable and susceptible part of your home against weather damage brought on by hail, wind, and storms. In this regard, The Roofing Company wants to help you with your preparation efforts by providing you with helpful tips to reinforce your roof before any type of weather phenomenon strikes.

  1. Have your roof inspected regularly. Is it suggested that you schedule an appointment with your roofing contractor at least once a year. The “at least” adds the recommendation that more often would be better, but not a must. The majority of people don’t have their roofs checked until something is wrong and by then damage has occurred that could have been avoided. The Roofing Company offers a courtesy annual inspection to its customers so that they will be kept up-to-date on the condition of your home. As previously mentioned, because your roof is the part of the home that receives majority of the force of any storm that hits your home, it needs to be checked whether it can handle the impact.
  2. Reinforce Shingles. Hurricanes can come with extremely strong winds of over 155 mph. Such intense speeds can blow your shingles off, leaving your home unprotected. It’s best to install or replace your current shingles with Class 3 or 4 ones, which are able to withstand these great speeds. You can apply roofing cement or caulk on the edges of your shingles so that they won’t be blown off and replace missing or improperly hammered nails on your roof to reinforce them.
  3. Maintain around the Home & Gutters. Do regular maintenance projects, including cleaning your gutters and downspouts, to avoid clogging. Trim nearby trees by cutting dead branches to avoid them from falling on your roof.
  4. Check your Attic insulation and Ventilation. The balance of indoor and outdoor temperatures is of utmost importance for proper insulation and ventilation. You want to make sure roof vents are well anchored and sealed and soffits are well attached to keep large amounts of water from blowing inside.
  5. Understand your Roof Warranty and Insurance Policy. It’s advisable to take important note of your roof’s manufacturer warranty policy and your own insurance policy. Usually, extreme weather damage is not considered. However, it always pays to be prepared and insured.

Being homeowners ourselves, we understand the fear that comes into play every time a storm is predicted to strike. However, preparation always helps in decreasing the extent of the possible damage you can incur. With this list, we at The Roofing Company hope you can protect your home as much as you can your family. To learn more about how we can help you, call us now at (757)-903-0050.
