Focus on the Attic for a Healthier Home & Longer-Lasting Virginia Beach Roofing

Roofing

Recently, we received a testimonial from a customer who hired us for a Virginia Beach roofing project based on one deciding factor: the attic.

Here’s what he had to say.

“My wife and I have spent last week interviewing six roofing companies for a bid to provide a new roof for our Virginia Beach home … Chuck Simpson [of The Roofing & Remodeling Company] was the last to be interviewed Saturday afternoon. He pretty much said what everyone else said and his price quote fell in line with most of the others. However, he did something during the interview that none of the others did or even mentioned. He went up into our attic to make sure there was nothing hiding under the shingles on the roof. Three of the six companies did not even bother to go up onto the roof to see what condition the roof was in and the other two just took measurements and said nothing about any possible concerns.”

We at The Roofing & Remodeling Company can’t overemphasize the importance of a properly functioning attic. Over years, continuous exposure to water, direct sunlight and bitter cold will affect the integrity of your roof and the house below it. And the first area to be affected is that just below the roof – the attic.

The Attic Inspection: Key to a Comfortable & Safe Home

In Chesapeake, Newport News and throughout the Hampton Roads region, water damage, leaks, seepage, cracks and mold are among the most common attic issues. When not addressed quickly, damage can rapidly spread to the rest of the house. A regular attic inspection will, in most cases, allow you to spot problems early on and make smaller, affordable repairs. Here are some important steps we follow to protect your home and identify potential problem areas in your attic before they become serious.

We inspect all attic vents to be sure they are unobstructed. Often soffit vents will be covered with insulation by a careless or inexperienced installer, preventing the air flow necessary to regulate attic temperature and humidity.
Ridge vents must have room to function properly. We check to see if the roof decking beneath the vent is cut back approximately 3” to ensure proper air flow.
Roof vents should be clear of leaves, bird nests and other debris that cause blockages.
Flashings around vents, chimneys, skylights and along roof valleys are most susceptible to water infiltration. We check for rotted roof decking at these locations.
We’ll verify that the attic has the recommended amount of insulation, and replace damaged insulation. Heat loss through the attic is often to blame for high utility bills. In our area, the Department of Energy recommends an attic insulation value of R38.
We inspect for mold and mildew, a common problem in inadequately ventilated attics that can lead to serious health issues for a home’s occupants.
We inspect structural wood for bowing and cracks that may require additional reinforcement.

Attic inspections are not something to be taken lightly. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) makes special mention of the importance of attic inspection.
