GAF scientists are fanatical about quality, and have gone beyond standard industry tests to subject GAF shingles to extreme conditions. They developed “The Monster,” combined with water from pressurized jets, the machine simulates the conditions of a Category 3 hurricane.
GAF scientists developed “The Monster,” a 600HP customized hot-rod engine turning carbon fiber blades to create sustained hurricane-force winds.Using “The Monster,” GAF’s Timberline® shingles with Advanced Protection™ technology were independently tested by PRI Construction Materials Technology in an Extreme 110mph Wind Test. To make the test even more extreme, brown craft paper was used underneath the shingles to test whether any water could penetrate the roof deck. The GAF Timberline shingles with exclusive Dura Grip™ adhesive passed this test with flying colors, with not a drop of water reaching the craft paper or the roof deck.
This successful outcome would be enough for most companies, but GAF didn’t stop there. Timberline shingles were then sent to FM Research Center, a highly-respected independent lab in Rhode Island, for an Extreme 150mph Wind Test – the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. Not only did the Timberline shingles hold up under testing, they withstood the extreme winds for over 30 minutes!
GAF scientists then wondered how much water punishment Timberline shingles could withstand. During the Extreme Soak Test, they drenched the shingles with water for 72 continuous hours, the equivalent of 10 feet of rainfall! Even after being hit with more water than falls in many parts of the world in one year, the Advanced Protection shingles didn’t let any water soak through to the craft paper.
Next, the scientists created an Extreme Waterfall Test. This test drenched Timberline shingles with nearly 100 gallons of water in just an instant. The shingles kept the roof deck dry once again.
Finally, GAF scientists sent Timberline shingles to Architectural Testing, an independent lab in York, Pa., that has built a device that creates an Explosive Air Shockwave that travels over 1,000mph. Could Timberline shingles with Advanced Protection stay in place when subjected to this destructive blast? The answer was a resounding yes!
