3 Ways to Know Your Skylight Needs Attention

3 Ways to Know Your Skylight Needs Attention
Exteriors

Skylights are a wonderful way to bring more natural light and warmth into your home while saving on energy costs. As beautiful and functional as they are, skylights, when not properly installed and maintained, can be a source of headaches for homeowners. Because skylights are mounted on the roof, serious leaks can occur.  Diagnosing and repairing skylight leaks can be tricky, even for the professionals.

We wouldn't advise a homeowner to climb on the roof and inspect a skylight. However, there are signs you may notice from inside your home that will let you know your skylight needs attention.

  • Stains. One of the most common signs of skylight problems is staining and discoloration that forms on or around the skylight. This is typically caused by corrosion of the flashings or sealant used to waterproof the skylight installation.
  • Debris accumulation. When leaves and other natural debris build up around a skylight, they can allow water to pool around the area. If the debris is allowed to remain for extended periods of time, fungus will grow and gradually rot the sealant that protects the skylight, resulting in roof leaks.
  • Fogging panes. Often condensation on the surface of a skylight is the natural result of moisture build-up from dryers, dishwashers, showering and other activities in the home. When condensation forms between the panes, it’s an alarming sign that the skylight is no longer waterproof.

Skylights don’t have to be a leak waiting to happen. With annual inspections and proper maintenance by a roofing professional, you can avoid skylight leaks and enjoy this feature of your home for many years.
